How to Prevent Smartphone Hand Pain

We use our smartphones daily. So much in fact that we depend heavily on them for business and pleasure and that requires your hands to hold the device for hours on end. But this frequent smartphone use has started to give users a condition called “smartphone thumb “ in which a repetitive stress injury is causing sore hand muscles and even tendonitis to occur.

That can lead to some pretty intense, chronic hand pain and despite all of the benefits that smartphones offer day in and day out, this type of ongoing discomfort may not be worth it in the long run. The main issue is at play here is that the human hand was never designed to hold a device such as this for seemingly endless periods at a time.

As a result, there is a right way and a wrong way to hold a smartphone in your hand. The shapes of these devices pose a significant hazard to holding them comfortably and when you are carrying and using your smartphone, the motions and movements of the fingers, namely the thumb, in concert with the way the rest of the fingers grasp and hold the device, can lead to bigger problems.

Wrist Flexes

You need to take a break from your phone periodically and when you do, the first thing to consider is the state of your wrist. Flexing it can help keep the wrist feeling loose and free. Good flexing exercises will move your hand tendons and muscles back and forth allowing for wider flexibility.

Hot or Cold

Using temperature sensitive compresses will relieve the tendons and muscles of the arm. Hot allows them to relax while cold can reduce swelling and numb any dull or throbbing pain that might occur from overuse of your cell phone.

Hands-Free Options

With phone use being outlawed while operating a motor vehicle, the phone manufacturers have been putting a greater emphasis on making their devices hands-free. This can be a real lifesaver for those who are experiencing hand pain from smartphone use. Use the talk to text mode on your phone keyboard and only tap to correct a word written out incorrectly.
